Our current situation is that there is no shortage of people who are making massive sums of money from the porn industry by promising to either destroy it or protect it. Ambitious politicians and anti-porn lobbyists are becoming billionaires by promising to destroy porn. Meanwhile, free speech activists are equally getting rich by promising to defend us. In the middle are the porn consumers who don’t give a damn as long as they don’t have to pay to watch adult content.

The adult entertainment industry, long a haven for free expression and entrepreneurship, faces mounting pressure from regulators, censors, and societal norms. Project 25, a series of guidelines designed to combat human trafficking, will have stifling consequences for pornographers and content creators. Monopolizing on the media’s willful ignorance and bias, the porn industry has been portrayed as the largest source of human trafficking. Porn creators and performers have become a scapegoat. While the intentions behind Project 25 are may appear to be noble, the restrictions will make it increasingly difficult for those who depend on the adult industry to earn a living. And it should be noted that for every inroad made to censor “adult content”, the tools are being perfected to censor any unwanted voice, video or dissension from any social media user.
